Living and dining room opening onto a terrace at Mr. Agrippa, 10 Mazor St, a minute from Machane Yehuda market in Jerusalem

Machane Yehuda: Serviced Apartments Near Jerusalem’s Shuk

Ask a Jerusalemite where to stay and the answer, more often than not, is near the shuk. Machane Yehuda market is the one place in the city that belongs to everyone: produce stalls and spice sacks by day, bars and small restaurants by night, the light rail at the door, and the Old City a short ride down Jaffa Road. TLV2GO has its Jerusalem building here: Mr. Agrippa, 15 serviced apartments in a new Jerusalem-stone building at 10 Mazor Street, a quiet lane one minute from the market. This guide covers what staying by the shuk is actually like, which apartment fits which trip, and how to make the most of a few days or a few months here.

Why the shuk is the right address in Jerusalem

Jerusalem rewards visitors who can walk. Machane Yehuda sits between Jaffa Road and Agrippas Street, with the Nachlaot neighbourhood and its stone lanes on one side and the city center on the other. From here, the Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall is ten minutes on foot, the Mahane Yehuda light-rail stop is at the edge of the market, and the Old City is a few stops down the same line. You can start the morning with coffee between the stalls, spend the day in the Old City or the Israel Museum, come back to the apartment to rest, and go out again in the evening when the shutters come down and the market turns into the busiest night-out in town.

That rhythm, out and back, out and back, is exactly what a hotel room makes awkward and a serviced apartment makes easy. Staying beside the market also solves dinner on the nights you do not feel like going out: fresh bread, cheese, olives and fruit are a two-minute walk away, and every apartment has a kitchen to cook them in.

Mr. Agrippa: 15 apartments a minute from the market

Mr. Agrippa is a boutique aparthotel, not a converted flat. The building is new, faced in Jerusalem stone, with an elevator, self check-in and a shared rooftop terrace with seating areas and a long dining table looking over the neighbourhood. Inside are 15 fully furnished apartments from one to three bedrooms, each with an equipped kitchen, a living area, a washing machine and dryer, smart TV, fast Wi-Fi and its own private safe room. Most have a balcony or a terrace, and the top floor is a three-bedroom penthouse.

The 15 apartments, by size: seven one-bedroom apartments for up to four guests (30 to 43 sqm), with a private balcony, a ground-floor terrace or a shared patio, in standard, Deluxe and Superior versions; a two-bedroom apartment with a terrace on the ground floor for up to six (46 sqm); and the three-bedroom penthouse for up to eight, with two bathrooms, a balcony and a city view (96 sqm).

Live availability and the exact price for your dates are on each apartment page, and the same apartments are listed on the apartments close to Machane Yehuda market page. If you are not sure which one fits, send us your dates and the size of your group and we will answer the same day.

A day that starts in the market

The shuk has two main lanes, the covered Etz Chaim street and the open-air Machane Yehuda street, with dozens of alleys between them. Mornings are for shopping: produce, halva, fresh juice, the bakeries and the spice merchants. Friday is the big day, when the whole city seems to come through before the market closes in the early afternoon for Shabbat, and the best plan for a guest at Mr. Agrippa is to shop early, carry it the one minute home, and cook. The apartments were designed with this in mind: a kitchen you can actually use, a dining table, and, for guests who keep Shabbat, timers on the electric blinds so nothing needs touching from Friday night to Saturday night. Saturday itself is quiet; the market is closed, the streets are calm, and the rooftop terrace is the best seat in the building. If you are coming for the holidays, see our Shabbat apartments in Jerusalem.

After dark the market changes character. The stalls close, the painted shutters come down, and the bars, wine counters and small kitchens open until late. It is a two-minute walk home afterwards, which is the whole point of sleeping next to it.

Getting around from Machane Yehuda

The Mahane Yehuda stop on the light rail is at the Jaffa Road edge of the market. One direction takes you to the city center, Jaffa Gate and the Old City; the other reaches the Central Bus Station and Yitzhak Navon station in two stops, where the fast train to Tel Aviv takes around half an hour. That makes Mr. Agrippa a practical base for a trip that splits its time between the two cities, and plenty of our guests pair a few nights here with a few nights in our Tel Aviv apartments. Within the neighbourhood itself you will rarely need transport at all: Nachlaot, the Ben Yehuda mall, Zion Square and the cafes of Jaffa Road are all a short walk.

Who stays here, and for how long

Couples take the one-bedroom apartments with a balcony: a weekend of food, walking and wine bars, with breakfast on the balcony before the city wakes up. Families choose the two-bedroom terrace apartment or the penthouse, where separate bedrooms, two bathrooms and a real kitchen make a week with children far easier than two hotel rooms. Groups of friends book the penthouse for eight and the shared rooftop for the evenings. And a growing share of our guests stay a month or longer: visiting academics and medical staff, families here for a simcha or a long holiday, people relocating to Jerusalem who want a furnished home while they look for a permanent one. For them the washing machine, the kitchen and the safe room stop being nice-to-haves and become the reason to choose an apartment over a hotel. Our apartments for rent in Jerusalem page covers short stays to monthly in more detail, and the monthly rental apartments in Jerusalem listing shows what is open for longer dates. Companies housing staff in the city can book through our corporate housing desk with one invoice.
